Public Address & Voice Alarm (PAVA)
Clear speech intelligibility is essential in public spaces such as train stations, airports, hospitals, places of worship, and shopping centres. It ensures that spoken messages — particularly safety announcements, directions, and important updates — are easily understood by everyone. This helps to reduce confusion, improve accessibility for a diverse audience, and create safer, more efficient environments.
While bells and sounders have traditionally been used for evacuations in settings where occupants are familiar with emergency procedures (such as offices and schools), PAVA systems are becoming increasingly prevalent due to their enhanced functionality and ability to deliver clear, actionable information.
We predict and measure speech intelligibility using the Speech Transmission Index (STI or STIPA) in accordance with current British, European or American standards as applicable.

Environmental Acoustics
Environmental acoustics play a vital role in shaping the quality, comfort, and sustainability of our surroundings. Effective acoustic design helps manage noise from sources such as traffic, industry, and public activity, protecting both public health and wellbeing. By carefully assessing and controlling environmental noise, it is possible to reduce disturbance, support planning and regulatory compliance, and create spaces that are more pleasant to live, work, and interact in. Ultimately, good environmental acoustics contribute to healthier communities, better productivity, and an improved overall quality of life.
We have extensive experience with BREEAM (Pol 05), BS 4142, and the National Planning Policy Framework assessments (measurements and predictions) including recommending mitigation measures where required, for both large and small projects.

Building & Achitectural Acoustics
Building and architectural acoustics are essential for creating spaces that are comfortable, functional, and fit for purpose. Good acoustic design ensures that sound is appropriately controlled within a building — minimising unwanted noise transfer between rooms, reducing reverberation, and enhancing speech clarity where it matters most. This is particularly important in environments such as offices, schools, places of worship, residential buildings, and public venues, where poor acoustics can impact concentration, privacy, communication, and overall wellbeing. By integrating acoustic considerations early in the design process, buildings can achieve higher performance, meet regulatory requirements, and provide a better experience for occupants.
We carry out BREEAM (Hea 05) assessments including speech privacy (measurements and predictions), measurements of DnTw, LnTw along with providing recommendations to achieve compliance with the Building Regulations Approved Documents E and O. We provide predictions and measurements in respect of BB93 and give recommendations to improve the acoustics of classrooms and lecture theatres to reduce talker fatigue and improve speech intelligibility. We calculate the noise ingress and egress of buildings as well as assess gymnasium noise. We produce reports for all RIBA stages up to and including pre-completion testing.
